Mentone Madness (2020)

A 3D action, edutainment, safety-awareness game.

The game is aimed at a primary school aged audience to inform them of safety awareness issues around upgrade construction works that were due to be conducted at Mentone train station.

The player must navigate the Mentone station precinct map, working through 3 levels of play by completing challenges and answering "safety around construction" questions, whilst still obeying road rules and safety directions.

I worked on this project as part of an internship I undertook across the 2019/2020 summer with the Level Crossing Removal Project, an initiative of the Victorian Government.

I worked with a partner intern, building on the work started by a previous intern who had inaugruated developmnent on the project prior to our involvement.

During our tenure on the project, my partner and I added the following aspects to the game:

  • Game play framework consisting of 3 levels
  • Design and implementation of play functionality for a new introductory action-focused first level.
  • Refinement of second level play where the player answers True-or-False questions in rulebooks they seek on the map.
  • Design and implementation of play functionality for the third and final level where the player seeks donut “markers” on the map and answers safety-oriented multiple choice questions.
  • Post game screen with score presentation and end-game functionality

Spatium (2019)

A 3D open-world, sandbox, science-fiction themed RPG.

The player must establish a new colony for humanity on the planet Domum. There the players must mine resources, construct buildings to house the first wave of colonists and ward off hostile alien creatures.

I worked on this game as part of my final year Capstone Project which ran across two trimesters. During my first trimester on the project I worked as a junior member to assist the incumbent senior students with development. During my second trimester on the project I worked as the Squad (Team) Leader where my duties included the following:

  • Guided the project's design and development, with assistance from other senior students.
  • Provided support to all team mambers and acted as escalation point.
  • Liased with Deakin staff on project/team and technical support issues.
  • Continued development of the game's quest system.
  • Provided written and oral design direction for team members to expand on.
In my trimester as Squad Leader the team achieved the following planned goals:
  • Implemented game's initial Mission, which incorporated the first 3 quests
  • Implemented title and main menu screen
  • Implemented initial version of new "ecology preservation" play mechanic
  • Implemented Quest Log UI and instruction screens
  • Implemented AI for alien creatures
  • Deployed game as standalone program

Escape From Night Terror Castle (2020) - Boardgame

A boardgame prototype constructed around the theme of dreams.

Players are trapped within the shared nightmare world of Night Terror Castle. They must work their way up through the castle, represented by the board, and overcome the Nightmare Lord to escape the nightmare and awaken back in reality.

Players move through the sections of the castle (Dungeons, Main Level, Sanctum & Chamber) and along the way fight monsters, collect items, encounter environments, trigger traps and find treasure. Once in the Chamber, players must defeat the Nightmare Lord in combat to win the game.

I developed this boardgame as part of a two-person group assignment for an elective "Game Design" subject wbere we were tasked with creating a game based on the theme of "dreams".

With this project I wanted to create a game that would provide players with the ability to make meaningful choices amidst the game's random events & outcomes.

Space Commander (2018)

A 2D vertical scrolling coin-op arcade style shooter game.

The player must defeat an invading alien force by destroying 30 alien ships and collecting 20 power orbs whilst trying to avoid being destroyed themselves.

I created this game for an assignment as part of a first year 'Games Fundamentals' subject. I used Unreal Engine to implement the game's logic via the engine's Blueprints functionality.

The Wizard Game (2018)

A 2D top-down 'Legend of Zelda' inspired action/adventure game/tech demo.

The player must work their way through the maze room and collect the key to unlock a door to escape the room.

I created this game for an assignment as part of a second year 'Games Development Patterns' subject. I used Unreal Engine to develop this game, implementing the specific games systems in C++ code.

The purpose of this game/tech demo was to implement "intelligent" computer controlled agents that act and react to the player-controlled character within the game's scenario.

Controls - W,A,S,D for movement, Left Ctrl - Shoot fireballs. ESC - To exit at any time
Each ghost monster has 1 hit point, the player has 3 hit points.

The Little Witch Game (2017)

A 2D retro style arcade maze game inspired by "Pac-Man" and "Gauntlet".

The player must navigate the little witch through the maze and reach the door, collecting gems and avoiding the ghosts along the way.

I created this game for an assignment as part of a first year 'Introduction to Games Development' subject.

I wrote the game for my 6 year old daughter to provide her with a game that
offers some gaming challenges but is not too overwhelming to play.
